English – I start the year with a book that I recommend with enthusiasm. If having a wife is something that requires dedication and effort, imagine having 4, 5 or 6 wives? Polygamy is a common practice in several countries, and the theme of the novel “The First Wife: A Tale of Polygamy”, by Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane, is about the drama and suffering of having to share a husband with other partners.

Rami is a passionate and submissive wife to her husband Tony, to whom she has been married for 20 years. It is only then that she discovers that he has other women and several children with each of them. We read the account of Rami’s hard discoveries through a lyrical, poetic and painful language. Rami’s suffering is a window into the harsh daily lives of millions of women in Mozambique, a Portuguese-speaking country that practices centuries-old injustices against women. “The First Wife” is a tear that deserves to be read.
