O gambito é uma abertura de jogo de xadrez, na qual o jogador começa a partida oferecendo ao oponente um peão (peça de menor importância) para abrir espaço para se mover no tabuleiro e conquistar as peças importantes do adversário. É uma ação destinada a enganar para derrubar o outro. Assisti à série “O Gambito da Rainha” na Netflix esperando ver a protagonista derrubar quem atravessasse na sua frente. No entanto, a série não é sobre jogos de xadrez, é muito mais interessante: é sobre a vida de uma menina órfã, Beth Harmon, que tenta construir sua vida após a perda da mãe (o pai nunca assumiu a filha). Ela vai para um orfanato, aprende a jogar xadrez, e o jogo a transforma na melhor enxadrista do país, depois em uma das melhores do mundo. Mas, para ela, as pessoas com quem se relaciona podem ser adversários mais complicados que os que se sentam à mesa com ela do outro lado do tabuleiro.

Assisti a “O Gambito da Rainha” ao mesmo tempo em que assisto a “Anne with an E”. É inevitável a comparação. Anne é também uma órfã, que cresce em um orfanato e depois é adotada. Mas as semelhanças terminam aÍ: Beth é quieta e monossilábica, Anne não consegue controlar as palavras que despeja aos milhares por segundo; Anne busca o outro, Beth pouco enxerga o outro; Anne é toda emoção, Beth é só razão; Anne é com “e”, Beth é com “x”; Anne é dama, Beth é xadrez; Anne é peças brancas, Beth é peças pretas; Anne começa o jogo, Beth termina. Anne e Beth são duas garotas separadas por um século inteiro de quadrados brancos e pretos. Cada uma, a seu tempo, merece ser assistida no mesmo tabuleiro da Netflix.

English – The gambit is a chess game opening, in which the player starts the game by offering the opponent a pawn (piece of lesser importance) to make room to move around the board and conquer the opponent’s important pieces. It is an action designed to deceive the other. I watched the series “The Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix hoping to see the protagonist take down whoever steps in her way. However, the series is not about chess games, it is much more interesting: it is about the life of an orphan girl, Beth Harmon, who tries to build her life after the loss of her mother (the father never took over the daughter). She goes to an orphanage, learns how to play chess, and the game turns her into the best chess player in the country, then one of the best in the world. But, for her, the people she gets along with can be more complicated opponents than those who sit at the table with her on the other side of the board.

I watched “The Queen’s Gambit” while watching “Anne with an E”. A comparison is inevitable. Anne is also an orphan, who grows up in an orphanage and is then adopted. But their similarities end there: Beth is quiet and monosyllabic, Anne cannot control the words she spills out by the thousands per second; Anne seeks the other, Beth sees little of the other; Anne is all emotion, Beth is only reason; Anne is with an “e”, Beth is with an “x”; Anne is checkers, Beth is chess; Anne is white pieces, Beth is black pieces; Anne starts the game, Beth ends it. Anne and Beth are two girls separated by a century of white and black squares. Each, in its time, deserves to be watched on the same Netflix board.
